Plantation is part of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area, stretching from the industrial, commercial corridor of State Road 7 to the Everglades in far west Broward County. The area was originally envisaged as a locale for market gardens that would supply neighboring towns with fruits and vegetables. Its first homesteads were ‘long acre’ lots, that is, 2/3rd of the land was dedicated to gardens and fruit trees. Its original acre homes still exist in Long Acre and Plantation Acres, many have been extensively renovated and are now valuable, sought-after properties.
Modern-day Plantation is a city that prides itself on being “green before green was cool.” Business and residential neighborhoods boast beautifully kept tree-lined streets and the city has 42 parks and playgrounds. It runs Operation Habitat, a program that encourages businesses and homes to plant native plants, attractive to bees and butterflies.
The city has three architect-designed, urban centers that combine residential, office, retail and restaurants in pedestrian friendly ‘healthy neighborhoods.’ There are two hospitals and a variety of specialist and general practice clinics. Plantation is a culturally diverse city with a range of public and private schooling and a mix of churches, synagogues and places of worship.
Plantation has 6 golf courses, including the city’s own 18-hole Plantation Preserve Golf Course and Club. There are many popular recreational facilities; aquatic and equestrian centers, seniors’ centers and several facilities for adult and youth sports. This all adds up to a city with a high ‘quality of life’ index.
Not surprisingly, real estate has kept its value through recent recessions and there are many sought-after neighborhoods for a variety of households, from students to families to retirees. There is a wide range of available real estate. There are condos and town-houses in well-kept developments, many with pools, tennis courts and keep-fit facilities. There are also many neighborhoods with affordably priced single-family homes, and others with ritzy, gated enclaves with million-dollar mansions.
Plantation’s city motto ‘the grass is greener’ is well-deserved as this city works hard to maintain its shaded, tree-lined streets, well-kept residential neighborhoods and accessible commercial and industrial centers.
